Minecraft developer Mojang Studios might be teasing a new feature for the popular sandbox game. They shared a picture of a Lodestone on the game's official Twitter account, sparking lots of guesses and theories from fans. The Lodestone is already a block in Minecraft, but some fans think this could mean a big update is coming, adding more ways to use the block.

At the end of 2024, Mojang announced big changes to Minecraft's update schedule. After 15 years of adding improvements and new content, the studio decided to stop the usual summer release of one major update. Instead, they will release smaller updates more regularly throughout the year. Mojang explained that the updates will vary in size but will give players new features to enjoy more often, rather than making them wait a whole year for a big update.

A New Minecraft Feature

Fans have been enjoying Minecraft's smaller, more frequent updates, and now Mojang seems to be teasing a new feature for the next one. On Twitter, the official Minecraft account shared a picture of a Lodestone with two rocks and two side-eye emojis as the caption, leaving fans both surprised and puzzled. While the image might look like just some rocks to most people, the post's alt text confirms it's a Lodestone. However, what Mojang is hinting at with the Lodestone is still unclear and open to speculation.

Currently, Lodestone blocks in Minecraft have only one use: they let players change the direction of a compass so it always points to the block. Lodestones can be used in all three dimensions and can either be found in chest loot or crafted using Chiseled Stone Bricks and a Netherite Ingot. This block was introduced in Minecraft's 1.16 update, also called The Nether Update, and hasn’t been updated since. However, that might be about to change.

Fans have different ideas about what Mojang might be hinting at, but many think it could involve adding Magnetite, the mineral Lodestones are made from. If that’s true, the recipe for crafting a Lodestone block might change, replacing Netherite with Magnetite ore. The last big Minecraft update came in early December 2024 and introduced a spooky biome with new blocks, flowers, and a creepy hostile mob called The Creaking. The patch notes for Minecraft Beta and Preview version 1.21.50.20 show that players in easy and peaceful modes will now keep their experience points, items, blocks, and weapons after dying. In the preview version, players will be able to keep their enchantment levels even after dying. Plus, achievements will still count on easier difficulty settings, even with the Keep Inventory feature. This way, players won’t be seen as cheaters for keeping their items.

The recently updated preview also introduces the Pale Garden biome, the Pale Oak tree, and the Pale Moss block, along with the Creaking mob and its Spawn Egg. It features a new ambient sound system and includes various bug fixes as well.
