Takes the settings of a futuristic world where you'll explore the top-secret organization that is researching and investigating a means to affect the laws of reality. Its plot is quite deep with several unexpected twists and carefully-designed characters, but what separates Control from other action-adventure game is the multi-functional gun and the Telekinesis power.

To be more specific, you'll wield a special gun namely the Service Weapon - an item that can change its form to every type of gun you can ask for: an Uzi, a grenade launcher, a shotgun or an AR. Apart from that, Remedy has done a good job maintaining its tradition of making realistic exploding animations and satisfying third-person adventuring experiences. If you haven't tried this game yet, we highly recommend giving it a look.

6. Death Stranding

The life of a shipper is already harsh in the real world, and in the dystopian world of Death Stranding, things are even more complicated. And even though the game is receiving wild reviews from the most positive one to 'literally unplayable', Kojima Production is still successful with their latest game with creating a wave of concern in the community.

Death Stranding is the story of joining the disjointed parts of the world, as well as connecting the world of Life and Death. To be more specific, the world has experienced a catastrophe called 'Death Stranding', which brought invisible creatures from the 'Beach' (basically the afterlife land) namely 'Beached Things' (BTs) to Earth.

Those creatures make explosions all over the world, consume death and make deteriorating rains that make everything ages faster than it should. As a result, the world is now separated in parts, and you'll take control of Sam Porter Bridges - the one with the task of bringing goods to the remote areas that are in need.

I'll leave the rest for you to explore, but to spoil a little bit, Death Stranding features a wide range of characters with their own stories, and through your journey to give them supplies and avoid the unknown creatures, you'll learn about the mystery behind the disaster and also the corporation that you're working for.

7. Devil May Cry 5

The latest installment from the notorious franchise of Capcom - Devil May Cry 5 - definitely worth a spot in any list of action-adventure games. Even though it focuses more on the eye-popping endless combos and rather than the adventure parts, it still a great game with the presence of a twisting story. Feel free to check its stylish action below:

Still keeping its traditional stylish combos that help you to keep your enemies on the air forever, Devil May Cry 5 tells a different story with Dante, Nero and a 'newcomer' - V as playable characters. Together, they'll have to use their power to stop the wicked plan of the Demon King Urizen - destructing the entire human world.

The game has received a lot of positive reviews by the community, which gives the developer inspiration to make a bunch of weird hands for Nero, including the weirdest banana hand that explodes yellow every time you strike your enemies. And if you're interested in a father that rip off his son's hand for his own sake, don't miss this one out!

8. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

Supported platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One

The winner of the most prestigious award at The Game Award 2019 - Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - is totally an action-adventure masterpiece from FromSoftware. Featuring a Japanese-ish world with its legends, as well as a titular character that rises from no one to a hero, this game has done a great job of portraying the Souls-like combats to its best.

Telling the story of a Shinobi, you'll make your adventure facing the most powerful legends of the old Japanese world to protect your master. And even though I still don't know whether the 'young' master is a boy or a girl, that can't stop me from completely falling in love with the Souls-like action of the game.

Start with only a sword with several normal moves and a block, you'll fight against the most ridiculous enemies such as the one who can strike you with insanely fast lighting, or the one that three-time bigger than you and can completely demolish you with two strikes. Together with four distinctive endings and a wide range of skills to learn later on, it's a great game that you would enjoy even though you might smash your keyboard several times due to its hardcore actions.

9. The Surge 2

Supported platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One

Did not gain the same popularity as the previous games on this list, The Surge 2 is still a wonderful action-adventure game portraying the neon-filled Cyberpunk world. In fact, it's a rare one to come out in 2019 that allows you to create your own character from head to toe. And when I say that, I mean you can rip off his/her limbs and replace it as well!

Its story is the main drawback of this game, as it doesn't contain the necessary plot twists to attract players. You'll dive into the role of an unnamed character in the dystopian world with the presence of Nanites - a newly-invented technology but later forbidden due to its danger that has cost 95% of the world's popularity.

But set that aside, the combat of The Surge 2 is very awesome standing alone. It's quite similar to Sekiro, but pack more of punches and kicks rather than sword-skills. Furthermore, it features limb-targeting mechanics, which allows you to rip enemies' part of their body and later use on yourself. Gross, but intriguing!

10. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (the remake version)

Supported platforms: Nintendo Switch

We'll wrap today's list with the one that Switch users cannot afford to miss. The 2019 remake version of The Legends of Zelda: Link's Awakening is a huge return of the extremely famous game for Gameboy in 1993, but with a much more gorgeous graphics thanks to the visual upgrade. You can see its beauty via the trailer below:

Apart from the timeless legend - Breath of the Wild, Link's Awakening is the best and also the easiest Zelda game to pick up. Its gameplay is quite simple - you'll take control of Link from the top-down perspective and explore the vast and colorful land of Koholint Island.

You've known enough about its story and action, so I won't say much about this, but let's look more into the adventure experiences of this remake. It's a rare game in this genre that features a truly open world that allows you to explore every place you want. Additionally, the land is filled with quests that range from many types, including puzzle-solving or fighting, adding a lot of depth into the game.

Overall, if you own a Nintendo Switch and want to part away from BotW for a while, let's check Link's Awakening out!

A midnight ride is always very relaxing and soothing, as you can finally relieve after a long day. It feels like your world shrink to the size of the car, while the rest out there is nothing related to you anymore.

Bird of Passage will give you exactly this experience, and pack more story and talks into this atmosphere. Maybe after playing this game, you might feel that expressing your feeling with a stranger is not that bad!

Overview of Bird of Passage

Basically, Bird of Passage is a visual novel game, in which you'll walk through the whole game's story choosing interactive dialogues. The concept of this game is quite simple: you'll play as an unnamed passenger wandering under the night raining sky of Tokyo by taxi. In fact, I wouldn't have known that I'm in Tokyo if the conversations didn't reveal it.

And not only your name is unknown, as your story and identity remain hidden as well. You're lost with your life now, and your task is to figure out his problems and at the same time, listening to the story of the taxi drivers you encounter. I'm surprised that no one ever ask you about your giant eyes that a human being shouldn't have.

Since there are many kinds of people out there, the same goes for the drivers in this game. To be more specific, some are very open and happy as you make conversation with them, while many others just prefer staying silence throughout the journey. And with different taxi drivers, you'll have to choose a different approach to make them open up their story.

Opting from a set of dialogue options, the game will lead you through various kinds of topics you can discuss with a stranger. Each choice will lead to a different outcome, and some of them will have you end up kicked out of the car. Having an argument with the driver will end your journey sooner than you've expected.

On the other hand, if you choose the right approach, the story of you - a mysterious passenger will unveil. Learn about your past that even you can make clear is something you wish you can do in real life, and with Bird of Passage, it's not that hard either.  And be sure to look closely at the game's dialogue and environmental change, as everything could be used to focus on this topic.

Last but not least, your mediating experience in this game will be even better with the sparkling road lights, as well as the sounds in the background. They are not only light and calming music but also smaller details, such as the sound of rain and winds as well.

Although the survival horror genre is definitely not made for everyone, it is a staple in my gaming library. There’s just something so … exhilarating about being scared. I don’t know if it’s that spike in adrenaline when I can sense that something’s going to go wrong in a dark hallway, the extreme panic when the sound of whatever that’s been hunting me draws near, or it’s just the fact that I willingly put myself in the perfect scenario for my fight or flight instinct to go wild. Survival horror is one of the most - if not the most - stimulating game genre.

If you’re also into survival horrors as much as I am or you want to get into it, here are some of the best games that I have played over the years. If you haven’t played them, you should definitely consider setting up a thorough play-through on one of these quiet, cold nights.

The Blair Witch Project Vol.1: Rustin Parr

Platform: PC

Blair Witch Project (1999) is the film that started the beloved found footage horror movie genre. And even if you don’t like the movie, don’t worry, the game’s completely different in spite of the similar title.

Although the game comes as part of the series, the first volume Rustin Parr is the only game that’s good. But that’s enough for us, you don’t need to bother with the rest of the series. In The Blair Witch Project Vol.1: Rustin Parr, you’ll be fitted into the shoes of agent Elspeth Holliday who’s part of the paranormal investigation bureau known as the Spookhouse. As expected, Holliday embarked on a fateful trip to the now infamous town Burkitssville. When you first arrive at the quiet backwater town, it seems quite normal. Still, you definitely can’t shake off the sense of it being plain … wrong: Something sinister is at play within the heart of the town hidden amidst woodland and endless fog.

It all came out in the night. Though much of the game is horrible (And not the good kind): The voice acting and the combat mechanic, for example. You cannot fault the way the townspeople transform into strange beasts at nightfall. With the way they twitch as if in perpetual seizure and the echoing voices bombarding your senses, the game could become frightening at times regardless of its numerous faults.

Manhunt

Release date: November 2003

Platform: PC, PS2, Xbox, Wii

Plenty of conflicts can spark with me simply mentioning Manhunt as a survival horror game. A lot of people consider it to be a stealth-action game but I disagree, you’re running away from quite literally the worst kinds of people to inhabit Carcer City.

The protagonist is one James Earl Cash, someone who has narrowly missed the death row only to be casted into a bloodied series of snuff films. The targets? Everyone from deranged and violent gang members to law enforcement officers.

The game revolves mostly around the gory action, some elements of stealth, a bit of jump scares here and there but overall: Constant adrenaline from the beginning to the end. The most memorable scene on top of all in Manhunt is the face-off between the player and Piggsy. A completely nut serial plus cannibal killer who’s psychotic enough to wear a severed pig’s head as a hat. To finish the ensemble, he also wields a chainsaw to boot, promising the most visceral of death to those who dare to stand in his way.

It’s easily one of the most terrifying scene in a video game, elevating the position of Manhunt on my list.

Siren

Release date: November 6th, 2003

Platform: PS2

You may have heard of this game before if you were there during the PS2 era. If you haven’t, Siren is probably one of the greater horror games period to ever exist on the platform. The game has plenty of unique mechanics that haven’t been done before it with any other games, and I haven’t seen it being replicated on any modern games, either.

The game follows multiple perspectives from different characters. In the game, your sole mission is to avoid and survive the relentless pursuit of the townspeople who had fallen to a dark force in the town and converted into horrific monsters.

But the thing about the game is that the horror expands beyond just the atypical hide and seek style gameplay. Here’s where the most unique mechanic sets in: The ability to see through the eyes of the monsters. While it might sound as if a useful ability, it’s a type of scare unlike anything else when you see your character haplessly standing around at the same time as you see the monster quickly approach.

Cold Fear

Release date: March 15th, 2005

Platform: PC, PS2

Cold Fear, in the grander scheme of things, isn’t a great game per se. But it’s got its own uniqueness that dragged it all the way into this list. It’s one of the first games that utilised deeply environmental factor as a gameplay feature (The rocking and swaying of the ship the protagonist is stuck on). It gives the game a great departure point from the ordinary zombie/monster-shooters that are plentiful on the market. It’s one thing trying to shoot a hellish creature into bits, it’s another thing to try and cap it while your aim is rocking back and forth all over the place.

It can give you quite some nostalgia that could be appreciated even today and it has enough scare materials for you to at least give it a try.

Clock Tower 3

Release date: December 12th, 2002

Platform: PS2

Clocktower 3 is the kind of game that scares you over its theme rather than its gameplay.

The game revolves around our young protagonist - Alyssa Hamilton - who got a letter from her mother cryptically explaining how she must go into hiding until her 15th birthday came to pass. Of course, there would be no game for us to play had she actually done what she was told. Instead, Alyssa ventured back to the family’s mansion hoping to find an answer. Soon enough, she found herself in a hair-raising, twisted journey through time down the hidden passageways all throughout the mansion. With each turns delivering her back to a specific time period.

The mansion sent her back to places reminiscent of serial killers throughout the ages. Her job was to uncover the mysteries surrounding them and to deliver peace to the victims. Though there are plenty of scares scattered throughout the game, the climax of horror is when you have to face down a axe-wielding maniac aptly named The Chopper. The scary thing is that he tends to materialise from out of nowhere and charge at Alyssa with a breakneck speed that can give you a heart attack just by looking at him approaching.

Outlast 2

Release date: April 25th, 2017

Platform: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC

Outlast - the first one - set a pretty high bar for modern horror games. The sequel, however, gathered all of the essences of the first game and kicked everything up several notches. The first game dealt with mostly an evil corporate’s failed experiment in the decrepit bowels of an asylum. The second one brought even greater risks to the life of the player (And the character we control) from untold horrors within the wilderness.

Blake Langermann and his wife Lynn are investigative journalists who were on their way to uncover a mystery in Arizona when their helicopter was brought down by an unknown force. When our protagonist - Blake - awoke, he had to venture through the No Man’s Land between the bloodied conflicts of two cults trying to find and rescue his wife.

You not only have to deal with absolutely bonkers cultists, you’ll also have to deal with Blake’s traumatic past which was highly exaggerated by his stress. Although Outlast is generally liked by all players, Outlast 2 players have pretty polarised opinions: You either love it, or you’ll hate it. But one thing you can’t deny is that the multitude of chase scenes peppered throughout the game can really get your blood running towards an early fatal heart attack.

The Thing

Release date: August 20th, 2002

Platform: PS2, Xbox, PC

The Thing (1982) is a pretty phenomenal sci-fi horror for its time. It’s got an atmosphere and a premise the video game port of the same name - The Thing for the PS2 in the early 2000s - tried to replicate. The message for the game is pretty similar to the movie: Be careful of the humans you met in your journey. They might not be humans after all.

It’s filled with a healthy amount of jump scares to keep you on your toes. The plot and the setting is more or less similar to the movie itself and the plot is built well enough for you to wonder every second in the game who will emerge alive. And the most important question of all: Who are real humans, and who are parasitic aliens beneath the convincing human skin?

The unique point of the game that differentiate it from games at the time was a panic meter. If you don’t manage it well enough, your squad mates may find escape by ending themselves or turn their guns away from the monsters and to their own friends.

Dead Space

Release date: October 13, 2008

Platform: PS3, Xbox 360, PC, IOS, Android

No contest on this one, Dead Space is seriously one of the best survival horror games ever made. In Dead Space, you took on the role of the quiet and unassuming engineer Isaac Clarke who’s stationed upon the ‘Planet Cracker’ USG Ishimura. Things start to go wrong when the ship unearthed an alien artefact that turned everyone into horribly disfigured and bloodthirsty monsters called Necromorph. You’re on your own and cut off from everyone else, trying to navigate the darkened and monster-infested corridors of the doomed space ship.

Necromorphs will keep on coming at you unless you cut out enough of their limbs to put them down for good. But the thing is that they rarely come as one single monster. Instead, they tend to come in large packs and waves that can make you sweat and anxious trying to hold back. And when you’re not fighting for your life, the unsettling, visceral carnage of the ship following the incident can raise every hairs you have. It’s easy to see that the foreign dark forces that descend upon the ship took it over so fast, the crews barely had time to prepare.

But don’t keep your guard down. Corpses rarely stay down for long in Dead Space.

Clock Tower

Release date: September 14th, 1995

Platform: PC, PS1, PS2

Clock Tower is the only point-n-click game to make it onto this list, but for a very good reason that it did. The game, which came out on the PS1, hasn’t aged well a decade later after it came out. However, it still retains much of the original creepiness that put me on edge when I first played it.

The trick of the game isn’t anything fancy: It’s actually all in the soundtrack. The soundtrack of the killer was a quick-paced tune and highly reminiscent of the vintage slasher genre of the 80s. Although it’s quite cliche, you won’t have time or the heart to think that when the music rose.

Silent Hill 2

Release date: September 24th, 2001

Platforms: PS2, PS3, Xbox, Xbox 360, PC

Silent Hill 2 is the type of game that if you haven’t played, you’re missing out on a big portion of the creme-de-la-creme of the horror genre. But if you plan on playing it, I recommend you to take up the original and forego the entirety of the HD remake: It was a disaster, and not the good kind.

The second game to the rather legendary horror series follows the footsteps of one James Sunderland as he returned to the mystical town of Silent Hill in search of information about his dead wife. As the world all around him got trapped in a dense layer of unnatural fog, the darkness within the quiet Maine town emerged in a nightmarish, twisted version of reality. He tried to follow all clues and paths, and he’d often meet others in his wander.

If the numerous monsters and the unsettling scene of Silent Hill hadn’t creeped you out just yet, remember that you’re closely watched by the infamous Pyramid Head. His only job that he took very seriously with the massive sword he dragged behind him was to punish all those in his domain: You, unfortunately.

The scariest segment of the game must be in the prison, where everything became so dark that even the torch you held in your hand gave little reprieve. There are the constant patrols of monsters, the suffocating atmosphere, the clanks of the metals, the dripping of soiled water, and the dried bloods on the walls … everything came together to scare you witless. And it did it for me, plenty of times.

We have all been there seeing the dreaded prompt popping up telling you that your storage is running low on memory. The dilemma came in when you can’t clear out much space, but still want to have a new game or two to enjoy.

What now?

You certainly can’t squeeze a 50GB, triple-A game into your dried out disk drive. But there are plenty of ‘spatially affordable’ games for you to get into if you ran into this problem. Don’t underestimate their small sizes. Albeit small, they can give you as much fun as a triple-A game could, for certain games, even more fun than the latest titles. So here are some low storage games for PC and mobile for those who need them.

1. Best Low Storage Games for PC

Downwell

Downwell is a pretty compact game at 200MB. It’s even smaller in comparison to some apps out there in the wild. The gameplay is all about descending into a well with a pair of rocket boots strapped to your feet. While descending, you, of course, will have to face off against a horde of enemies. After you have annihilated them, your task is to grab as much loots off our their bodies as you possibly can. With all of that loots in your inventory, you can go ahead and buy some fancy new items in the game’s shops and levelling up your character. Although certainly repetitive, the gameplay is fun and quite addictive.

Devil Daggers

If you’ve ever gotten delirious while hungover or feverish, Devil Daggers looks and feels probably very similar then. After all, you’re being attacked by the Ghost of Christmas Past with a self-made, Walking Dead-style baseball bat with nails hammered into it.

It’s the atypical arcade shooter. Fast-paced but you need not to worry about learning the terrain: There’s only one level, one map in the entire game. All of the enemies will always appear in the same place. The entire goal of the game isn’t getting from point A to point B, everything is about absolute perfection. You will need to rely on pure muscle instincts and superb hand-eye coordination to emerge alive. The game doesn’t offer a lot to you in term of weaponries. You only have one weapon and some ‘secret mechanisms’ for you to discover and use.

That’s why the game’s not just about the muscles, it’s about the brain, as well.

Doom

If you proclaim yourself to be a gamer and have never heard of Doom, I’ll say it now, you’re a poser. Doom is one of the games that revolutionise gaming when it came out in 1993. Every gamers must play through the classic at least once. Even after all of these years, the game still holds a certain charm to it that can make most of us who are used to photo-realistic graphic engines and sophisticated gameplay pretty hooked into it all.

Since it’s quite an old game when a gigabyte of storage is almost unheard of, it’s only 17MB. Smaller than most apps you got on your smartphone.

Pixel Piracy

True to its name, Pixel Piracy puts you into the leather boots of a pirate. Your job is to recruit some trustworthy sailors and crew-mates, jack up your ship, and set sails for the greater seas in search of treasures. Although the game got a pretty rocky launch, after several patches and updates, it’s been quite fun to play now. It’s only 200MB to boot, so don’t worry much about the storage issues.

Brigador

It’s a tight fit at 1GB of storage space minimum for the game, but it’s so worth it. Your character’s name is right in the title, Brigador, and your job is to obliterate an entire city to bits as quick and as efficiently as you possibly can. If you’re a fan of the 80s, the game has plenty of atmosphere for you to bask in. Plus, you can’t fault the awesome soundtrack.

Shovel Knight

For being one of the best games in the last decade, Shovel Knight is surprisingly forgiving on storage space: 250MB approximately. It’s surprising that such a great game is so … small that it’s downright magical it could be that compact. It got that Metroidvania feeling going for it, and the pixel arts are masterpieces within themselves. There is no shortage of good things that I can say about this game, but I’ll let you find them all out by yourself, instead.

Dead Cells

Dead Cells is no doubt one of the best games that I have ever played and I’m not exaggerating at all. For such a game, 500MB is rather tame. It’s a 2D, Metroidvania-style game that you won’t ever be bored playing over and over again for the next few months after you had beaten it. Although it’s certainly a difficult and challenging game, it’s still lenient since equipment and weapons drop randomly during each run. I still got the game on my computer, and I don’t think I’ll be removing it from its rightful place anytime soon.

Nex Machina

It’s one of the game that if you have less than 1GB left to spare, it’d fit right in. Nex Machina is the type of bullet-hell fun that’s going to get you sweating and entertained at the same time. Movement is sharp and snappy, and hit detection is just right, too. It also gives you the ability to adjust the difficulty and the gameplay makes it easy for you to ‘get into it’ - addicted, I mean. Playing it alone and you’ll be pushed into a quest to perfect it.

Spelunky

Being one of the greater roguelike games in recent memory, 270MB offers a beautiful balance between size and fun. It’s a platformer with randomly generated map and terrains, you’ll venture into the darkness of crypts and tombs trying to save your friends while facing the numerous monsters and traps along the way. The great thing about the game, like I said, is that no new game is ever the same: It’s all randomly generated.

Into the Breach

If you like the tactical aspect, you’ll love Into the Breach and all you’ll need to shell out in term of storage is 200MB. In comparison to all of the strategic and tactical games ever released for the last five years, it’s definitely one of the greater ones out there. The gameplay introduces a unique point by showing you just what the enemies would do so there’s no guesswork needed. Your job is to plan out in anticipation of their moves and take as much opportunities as possible.

2. Best Low Storage Games for Mobile

Mekorama

It’s a 3D puzzle game wherein you get into the role of a tiny robot navigating its way through some pretty sophisticated puzzles. The game has got everything going for it: A beautiful visual style, great soundtracks, and even a game editor where you can exercise your planning skill by devising awesome levels with masterful puzzles to challenge yourself, your friends, and other people. It’s free and on top of all, it can be played completely offline. That’s quite rare these days.

2048

2048 is a very well-known game that’s been making rounds on social medias a few years before. A mathematical puzzle game (Nothing too complicated), all you have to do is swiping up and down in order to combine tiles of similar values to make a larger one. The thing is that with every swipe you make, an additional tile is added to the board. You have to plan your move very carefully if you want to last long. Fortunately, it can also be played offline so you don’t have to rely on constant connectivity to get some good quality entertainment.

Zombie Smasher

True to its name, it’s a zombie game and if I was to compare it to sometime, it’s quite similar to Plants vs. Zombies. You need to tap onto the zombies to destroy them before they could reach you but there’s a catch. Among the horde there’d also be innocent people trying to run away from the zombies. Make sure you don’t accidentally kill them off, too. Awesome clicker game and quite addictive.

ZigZag

Also a clicker game but this time, your job is to lead a ball through a precarious path and collect gems while you’re at it. The further you get down the line, the more score you’ll have. It will rile your competitiveness up quickly and in no time at all, you’ll yearn to beat your last record again and again. Reflex and awareness are absolute key to success.

Flow Free

Your job now is to join different dots together into continuous lines. Once you have connected all of the dots together, you’ll be automatically carry to the next level. But here’s the catch: The lines can’t intersect one another. The more difficult a level, the more dots you will have to join. So if you’re looking for a game to get your brain going, this is it.

The last title in this list of low storage games is Chess.com.

Now this one is a classic that I definitely don’t have to explain much. Chess.com  has proven just how viable chess is for on-the-go entertainment. It still comes with all of the benefits you’ll get playing chess physically: Developing forward thinking and tactical mindset as well as patience.
